On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, various cities across the country experienced country-wide demonstrations marked by Azimio protests which coincided with a matatu strike.

In Kisumu, the demonstrations took on unique forms. Some matatu operators suspended their services and organized a football match at the bus terminus, complete with a referee. They enjoyed the camaraderie and excitement of the game while advocating for their cause.

Meanwhile, in other parts of Kisumu, protesters paraded through the streets of Kibuye, carrying a green and yellow painted coffin. They chanted slogans and picketed as they made their way, highlighting their grievances and demands.

The town of Nyeri also witnessed a partial suspension of matatu operations. Some matatu operators engaged in rope jumping activities at the terminus.

In Nanyuki, the main terminus became a hub of activity. Matatu operators were heavily involved in football matches and rope-jumping activities.

The matatu strike was organized by matatu operators in protest against the soaring cost of fuel. They expressed their concerns that the exorbitant fuel prices were significantly impacting their ability to operate and sustain their businesses.

Simultaneously, the Azimio protests took place, with participants voicing their discontent regarding the high cost of living, burdensome taxes, and other pertinent issues.

The demonstrators sought to draw attention to the challenges faced by ordinary citizens, demanding solutions and improvements in these areas.
