Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union (KMPDU) has accused the police of shooting its Secretary General Davji Atellah in Nairobi.

KMPDU, while condemning the incident, said Attelah was shot and injured while leading medical interns in a peaceful march in Nairobi on Thursday, February 29.

"We condemn in the strongest terms the shooting of our SG @Davji by the police this afternoon when he was leading the Medical interns in peaceful March.

"The doctors of Kenya have endured enough! This is the straw that breaks the camel's back," KMPDU said in a post on X.

Attellah was rushed to a city hospital for medical attention.

The union had called for demonstrations in the city to protest the delayed posting of medical interns and the payment of fees for postgraduate students.

Atellah had earlier in the week written to the Nairobi Regional Police Commander requesting security during the procession.

The march was scheduled to begin at the Kenya Medical Association Centre in Upper Hill, then proceed to the Ministry of Health offices and finally, the Treasury headquarters in the city center.

“We write to inform you of our intention to conduct a peaceful procession concerning the delayed posting of medical interns and the payment of fees for postgraduate students. The procession is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 29th February 2024, commencing at 9:30 am,” Atellah wrote.

“In light of the importance of maintaining order and ensuring the safety of all participants, we kindly request your assistance in providing security during this event," he added.

The police are yet to comment on the alleged shooting incident.
