A family in Karue village in Gichugu constituency, Kirinyaga county is in shock after their kin collapsed and later died during a military recruitment exercise at the General Kassan stadium on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

While confirming the incident, Kirinyaga East sub-county Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Millicent Ochuka mentioned that the deceased, Francis Wachira, 25, had enrolled for the exercise and was seeking to be recruited in the Kenya Defence Force (KDF).

She also noted that witnesses explained that Wachira was running with his colleagues when the unfortunate incident occurred.

He collapsed and immediately began foaming in his mouth.

Upon realisation of what was happening, KDF officers rushed him to Kianyaga sub-county hospital for treatment.

However, his condition deteriorated and was later transferred to Kerugoya Referral Hospital for further treatment.

Wachira died while undergoing treatment.

His body was moved to the facility's mortuary and police have commenced investigations.

"The body of the deceased is lying at the referral hospital mortuary awaiting post-morterm," Millicent said.

The family of the deceased expressed shock and agony over their son's death.

Led by the deceased's father, Charles Kabuga, the family said that Wachira left home on Tuesday and was optimistic about the job.

Kabuga said he felt disturbed after he received a phone call asking him to head to the hospital shortly after his son left home for the recruitment venue.

"When I received information that I was urgently required at the hospital, I abandoned what I was doing at home and rushed to the hospital where I was told that my son was no longer alive. I was shocked when I learnt what happened to my son," Kabuga told a local publication.
