Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki on Friday, February 16, 2024, directed a countrywide police crackdown on all village bars following the deaths of revellers who died after consuming illicit brew in Kirinyaga County.

The CS further directed that licenses will only be issued to established liquor businesses operating in shopping centres.

"I have directed the relevant officials to close all outlets that are selling alcohol in the villages because there are people who have set up alcoholic establishments in the middle of villages, and this is what has ruined very many families," the CS stated in Kirinyaga.

Adding; "We cannot have people have licenses to operate paths in villages, because this is what is affecting very many families."

At the same time, Kindiki asked respective authorities to close all bars in the affected area following a request by locals.

"We are urging that the establishments be closed for a minimum of two months to address the pressing issue at hand," a local suggested to which the CS responded by saying; "You have heard the people's demands. Today is Friday, and I will return here on Wednesday to ensure the directive is carried out."

Notably, Kithure Kindiki recalled senior law enforcement officers following the tragic incident. The CS faulted the officers saying their misconduct contributed to the deaths.

The CS subsequently called on relevant security agencies to probe the incident and ensure that those found guilty are brought to book.

"The Government has recalled senior law enforcement and National Government Administration officers who by conduct or misconduct may have contributed to the recent loss of lives occasioned by the consumption of an illicit toxic brew in Kirinyaga County, Central Region. Relevant agencies are directed to immediately initiate inquiries upon which appropriate administrative action will ensure on those found culpable," the CS said.
