The Ministry of Health (MoH) has called on Kenyans countrywide to turn up and donate blood to assist victims of the Embakasi gas plant explosion that claimed three lives.
In a statement, MoH through the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service (KNBTS), urged interested citizens to visit blood donation sites at the Nairobi Region Blood Transfusion Centre (RBTC), Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) - Helipad Square and Mama Lucy Hospital Satellite.
"The fire has resulted in critical injuries that require blood and blood components transfusion. To further bolster our blood supply, we call upon the generosity of the public to visit our blood donation sites, at the Nairobi, RBTC, KNH - Helipad Square, and Mama Lucy Hospital Satellite to donate blood. We emphasize that blood donations can still take place countrywide at our various centres," the statement read in parts.
The health ministry also confirmed that KNBTS has activated blood centres countrywide to send blood promptly to the Nairobi RBTC for immediate dispatch to affected hospitals.
While reiterating that mechanisms have been put in place to address the blood needs of victims, MoH encouraged hospitals to collect blood and blood components directly from all blood establishments at Mama Lucy Hospital, Nairobi Region Blood Transfusion Centre (RBTC) and Kenyatta National Hospital.
"Nairobi RBTC has enough blood components especially frozen plasma (FFP) that will aid in the care of burn victims," MoH added.
Further, the health ministry affirmed its commitment to standing with the families affected and condoled with the families of the deceased.
"MOH stands in solidarity with the families affected by this tragic incident, offering support and assistance during these challenging times. We extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their loved ones and express our sincere wishes to the swift recovery of the injured," MOH stated.
