The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has confirmed that it has successfully conducted a full-scale emergency drill at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa.
In a statement, the authority revealed that the exercise conducted on Friday, October 6, 2023, involved a simulated incident of an aircraft that caught fire as a result of an engine failure reported by the pilot.
According to the authority, the exercise is an integral part of KAA's commitment to bolster the airport's emergency response and ensure the highest level of preparedness for unexpected events.
"The emergency drill is an integral part of KAA's commitment to bolstering its airport emergency response capabilities and ensuring the highest level of preparedness for unforeseen events.
"The primary objective of the drill was to test and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the airport's emergency response procedures, coordination among various agencies and the overall readiness of the airport's personnel," the statement reads in parts.
Additionally, the authority assured the public that the entire process was simulated and that no one was harmed in the process.
"KAA would like to assure the general public that this incident was entirely simulated and did not pose and real danger to passengers, crew members, or airport operations. The safety and security of all individuals involved were strictly prioritized throughout the exercise," the statement added.
On his part, the authority's managing director Henry Ogoye expressed immense satisfaction with the success of the exercise reiterating that the procedure ensures the highest level of preparedness.
"I commend the efforts of all the personnel involved in this exercise for their professionalism and dedication," he stated.
