Media personality Jimmy Gathu has revealed why he failed to visit the late Catherine Kasavuli on her deathbed.

Speaking during the requiem mass in honour of the veteran news anchor held at the Friends' International Centre along Ngong Road, he said he did not want to have her ailing memories.

"Martin, I am sorry I couldn't come to visit her (Kasavuli) in the hospital. I did not want to remember her that way. But know I am here for you. All I can give is my friendship," he stated.

Gathu emotionally eulogized Kasavuli as a great mentor.

"Thank you for teaching me the importance of harnessing and honing my talent. I do not know why she chose to mentor me yet I was a nobody," he added.

Kasavuli passed away on December 29, 2022, aged 60 at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after battling cervical cancer. She had been admitted to the hospital on October 26, 2022.

The late journalist's burial has been scheduled for Saturday, January 14 at her rural home in Zululu, Vihiga County after the funeral service at Tigoi Primary School.

Ruto offsets Kasavuli's bill

President William Ruto on Sunday, January 8, waived the hospital bill incurred by the late veteran journalist Catherine Kasavuli, KBC anchor John Jacob confirmed.

In a tweet, Kioria expressed gratitude to the Head of State for helping offset the bill.

"Great thanks to our President who has waived the hospital bill incurred by my colleague Catherine Kasavuli. May her soul continue to rest in peace," he wrote.

Earlier, Kasavuli's family had released a funeral programme highlighting several events before her burial.

This included fundraising that was held at the United Kenya Club on Saturday, January 7, 2023.

The family sought the help of well-wishers to offset an outstanding Ksh4 million bill accrued during Kasavuli's stay and treatment in the hospital.
