Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji on Sunday, October 31 claimed he faced insurmountable threats months before the August 9 General Election.

Without revealing where the threats came from, Haji said there were people who were determined to have their way even if it meant subverting the constitution and the rule of law.

"We stood firm as independent institutions despite threats and coercion. My house was broken into a few months before the election. I did not say much, but I was coerced and I was pushed to feel I was a second-class citizen of this country despite the fact that I am a Kenyan.

"Basically, those people wanted to bend the constitution to serve their own interests but I stood firm despite all those threats," he said when he appeared on a local television station.

He, however, said he did not regret working with George Kinoti who was the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

"I don't regret working with the former DCI boss. This was a learning curve for me and it is good for this country because now we have the decision to charge guys and we have prosecutors who understand what is required of them and I don't think this will ever be repeated.

"We now have guidelines that are appreciated by everyone including the President," he said.

Haji further said his office has dropped cases against many people who were charged without sufficient evidence.

"We have had reviews, dropped some cases, made some people state witnesses. We have even gone to prisons and correctional facilities and released people after reviewing their cases," he stated.
