Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has broken ranks with the Council of Governors (CoG) and urged his colleagues to accept the Sh316 billion allocated to the counties.

Sonko said residents continue to bear the brunt of the impasse over the Division of Revenue Bill.

While the National Assembly has passed its version of the bill capping county allocation at Sh316 billion, the Senate and CoG are pushing for Sh335 billion as equitable share for counties.

Sonko said the push and pull has derailed development projects in counties. Speaking in Meru yesterday, the governor said although Sh316 billion is not enough, governors should respect the President’s directive that they make good use of what is available.

“The President has spoken. Let’s take what we have been given,” he said. Sonko said his administration will reduce spending on recurrent items such as trips and meetings.

Elsewhere, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi  dismissed the  governors’ calls  for more funds as unrealistic.

Speaking at Komothai Catholic Church in Kiambu, he challenged county bosses to account for the cash they have already received.
