‘Firirinda’ hitmaker D***son Munyonyi buri*d in emotional send-off

Veteran Mugithi artiste Dickson Munyonyi, who came to the limelight after his famous 'Firirinda' song has been laid to rest.

Munyonyi who died last Saturday morning was laid to rest in an emotional burial ceremony held at the Githuya Primary School in Gatundu South, Kiambu County on Saturday, January 13, 2024.

Public Service Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria and Kung'u Kibathi, a South Gatundu leader graced the ceremony.

At the funeral, a section of his fans who attended the ceremony sang his hit song as they reflected on how his music impacted lives.

The musician had been diagnosed with cancer months before he gained popularity with his hit song 'Firirinda'.

He died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Kiambu County.

Before his death, the musician and his family members made numerous appeals to well-wishers to help him offset his medical bills.

Munyonyi became the subject of attention in 2021 after his hit song gained popularity at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite the song being released 30 years ago, a section of fans resonated with the music making it a national treasure in the country.

Tributes for the departed musician streamed in after the news of his demise. Various renowned leaders who previously acknowledged the departed musician's hit song such as Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) CEO Ezekiel Mutua celebrated the musician as a creative who impacted the lives of Kenyans.

"In celebrating the late Dickson Munyonyi's life, I pray the family finds comfort in the joy of the lives he impacted and his creativity as captured by these youths who hilariously "corrupted" his song. They should perform at the burial!" he stated.
