St Theresa's Eregi Girls High School in Kakamega County has been temporarily closed.

According to preliminary reports, Eregi School was closed on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, after students went on a rampage demanding to go home.

Several learners have been admitted to various hospitals following an outbreak of 'strange illness.'

Western Region Director of Education Jared Obiero confirmed the closure of the school, advising parents to pick up their daughters until a new directive is issued.

“The school has been closed and parents are advised to pick up their students. We’re hoping to get further communication shortly,” Obiero said in the presence of Kakamega County Education CEC Boniface Okoth.

The affected students displayed symptoms of knee pain and paralysis, which has resulted in difficulty walking.

Kakamega County’s CEC for Health Bernard Wesonga said 29 students have been admitted at Iguhu Hospital, 39 at Kakamega Referral Hospital, 31 at Mukumu Mission Hospital, and 14 at Shibwe Hospital.

“Some students are responding positively to medication, while others are still under medical care,” he stated.
