Businessman David Ngari, popularly known as Gakuyo, claims he has been arrested by detectives based at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In a self-recorded video, the controversial televangelist and founder of Ekeza Sacco claimed that he was picked up by the sleuths as he was about to board a plane to an undisclosed location.

Gakuyo disclosed that he was unaware of the motive behind his arrest, but linked it to a political witch hunt.

“They say I cannot leave the country and I just think there is some revenge somewhere. I’m happy there might be an opportunity to see the judge and to be told what case I have. I'm at the DCI at the airport,” he said.

The businessman, who unsuccessfully contested for the Thika Town parliamentary seat in the 2022 General Election is not new to controversy. He has been under investigation by the police over accusations of embezzlement of Ksh1 billion from Ekeza Sacco members.

Gakuyo is said to have transferred the money from the Sacco to his personal accounts and used it to upgrade his lifestyle by buying prime properties for his family and boosting his struggling real estate firm.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was yet to respond to the claims by the time of publishing this news article.
