Police in Bungoma County have launched investigations into an accident that claimed the life of a mother and her child at Namundi junction, Lwakhakha Sirisia Sub-County, on the evening of Saturday, January 7, 2022.

The young mother, identified as Lucy Mulunda and her two-year-old daughter met their untimely death after a bus headed to Nairobi Bus veered off the road and hit the motorcycle that was carrying them.

According to a witness of the collision, the two-year-old was the first to fall off the motorcycle and when the mother went to save her, the bus 'fell' on her.

"The bus hit the lady after it veered off the road, and Lucy fell off the bike to save the daughter only to be 'fell on ' by the bus," the witness told K24 Digital.

The two died on the spot while 33 others on board sustained serious injuries and were rushed to various health facilities in the county.

Confirming collision, Bungoma West OCPD David Kandie called on passengers to avoid boarding overloaded vehicles.

"We have launched investigations on what transpired. The mother and the baby died on the spot of the accident. I urge Kenyans to avoid boarding overloaded vehicles as they put their lives in danger," Kandie stated.

"Let's be vigilant and check on vehicles before boarding them," he added.

Addressing the media after visiting the scene, Sirisia MP John Waluke called on relevant authorities to move with speed and ensure a reduction in the number of accidents on the Chwele-Lwakhakha road.

"The relevant authorities should act quickly because we cannot sit and watch people losing lives on this road," Waluke stated.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to the morgue, awaiting an autopsy as investigations commence.
