Atheists in Kenya President Harrison Mumia has called on low-income earners to consider having smaller families of at most two children.

In a statement dated Friday, November 10, Mumia cited the challenges faced by many families in meeting basic needs, emphasizing the financial strain imposed by the rising cost of living.

"Life in Kenya is becoming increasingly expensive. The cost of living has been rising steadily over the past few years, and it continues to strain people's finances, with many Kenyans struggling to afford even the most basic household items," Mumia stated.

According to Mumia, the Kenya Economic Report 2023 reveals that 77 per cent of workers earn less than the minimum wage, covering only about half of the necessary living costs.

In light of these economic hardships, the Atheists in Kenya Society is advocating for smaller families as a means of achieving greater financial stability.

"Under these hard economic times, we encourage Kenyans, especially low-income earners, to have smaller families of at most two children. Smaller families are more financially stable due to fewer expenses and shared resources. Our message to Kenyans, especially women, is that children should never be a priority if you cannot afford to raise them," Mumia urged.

Mumia also encouraged those with the means to consider adoption as an alternative to having biological children.

Adoption, he suggested, offers a compassionate solution and an opportunity to provide a loving home for children in need.

"We also encourage Kenyans who can afford to adopt children. Adoption of children should be an alternative to getting one's own child. We applaud all those women who have chosen to be child-free," Mumia noted.
