A General Service Unit(GSU) officer deployed in Kisii was on Sunday, February 3, 2024, rescued from mob action after a robbery with violence incident.

In a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI), the armed cop identified as Edgar Opollo was saved from a furious mob by "...Kisii Central police who were on patrol, after finding him under a hail of hefty blows."

DCI said further inquiry established that the officer had robbed a smartphone from a Kisii University student, and on frisking the injured suspect found the phone.

Although he had been arrested and escorted to the station, he was taken to the hospital for medical attention ahead of his arraignment.

"The rogue police officer continues recuperating under police guard at a Kisii hospital pending interrogation and arraignment for robbery with violence," DCI stated.

Meanwhile, DCI sleuths noted that they are still actively searching for an armed gang of three for another incident of robbery in which the cop was also implicated.

The gang armed with AK47 is said to have robbed Ksh40,000 from PEPS Mini Supermarket which is situated at Corner Mbaya in Kisii.

"The incident was captured by CCTV cameras showing three robbers who had partly covered their faces, two of whom were armed, one with an AK47 and the other with a pistol. The rifle bearer had police fatigues on, but it was not apparent that he was a police officer," DCI stated.

Detectives said the officer was successfully identified as one of the robbers after the authorities conducted an identification parade with the supermarket owner.
