Former “Tahidi High” actor Abel Mutua, popularly known as Fredie, has opened up about a difficult period in his life, when he was so broke to the extent he could not afford to buy himself basic things such as clothes.

Speaking on K24 TV show, “Alfajiri”, on Thursday, July 25, Mutua said “2016 was my worst year”.

The gifted actor said after quitting Citizen Television over workload issues in 2012, employment opportunities became hard to come by.

His long wait for a “meaningful” job stretched all the way to 2016, when -- after ditching KTN’s “The Real Househelps of Kawangware” local drama series --, he alongside Philip Karanja, formerly known as Melvin on “Tahidi High”, started their own production company, Phil-It Productions.

Mutua said they poached drama producers and actors for a show aired on Maisha Magic on hefty salaries, and at the end of 2016, they couldn’t afford to pay the crew members their monthly wages.

“We had to borrow loans from banks and friends in order to settle our debts,” said Mutua.

The 34-year-old said all that while, it was his wife, Judy Nyawira, who was settling the bills, including food, rent and clothing.

“I was so broke to the extent that I couldn’t afford to my buy my own underwear. It is my wife, who was actually buying me innerwear at the time,” Mutua told show host Jeff Mote.

“I may not have much [financially], but one thing I am thankful for is the good wife God gave me,” said Mutua.

The father-of-one revealed he found his financial footing in 2017, and ever since, things have been looking up.
