The rescue team at the Abimbo goldmine that collapsed on December 2 in Siaya County is hopeful that they will retrieve the body of Tom Okwach after 45 days.
The team has reported that at the point where they have reached so far, houseflies are hovering and a foul smell has engulfed the area.
"We have very good signs that we are finally finding the body of Tom. The kind of houseflies we are seeing and the strong smell clearly indicates that we are closer to the remains of Tom," one of the rescuers said.

The rescue team, however, said the rains that are currently hitting Siaya County are a hindrance to their rescue operations.
"In the morning (Sunday) there was heavy rainfall and when we came to continue with the operation, we found the walls had fallen back into the deepest part where we were trying to retrieve the body," the rescue team leader Edwin Omondi said.
He said they are optimistic that by tomorrow evening they will have registered some positive results.
"We should have closed the operation by yesterday (Sunday), but we are optimistic that by tomorrow afternoon or late in the evening we will have registered some good results," he added.
Last week, an NGO; Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) announced that they had taken up the costs involved in the recovery process.
