A 37-year-old woman from Maragua Town in Murang’a County was on Wednesday, January 27 found dead inside a well.

The woman, identified only as Carol, had earlier complained to her family members that she was undergoing financial stress.

“On Tuesday evening (January 26) when we were with Carol in the house, she excused herself, saying she was going to meet a neighbour. Hours passed by but she did not return,” the deceased’s sister told K24 Digital.

Carol’s sibling claims that the deceased had, in the last three days, complained of losing Ksh300,000 in a failed business venture.

“She said a commercial bank that had lent her the money several months ago was pursuing her, seeking to recoup at least Ksh200,000,” said the sibling.

Carol’s neighbour discovered her body in the well Wednesday morning.

“The neighbour saw the deceased’s pair of shoes and a mobile phone near the well opening, and when he looked inside the well, he saw her body in the water,” said Carol’s sister.

Maragua area police boss, Joshua Okello, confirmed the incident to K24 Digital, saying investigations into Carol’s death have commenced.

Carol, who was a small-scale trader in Maragua Town, did not leave behind a suicide note, Okello said.

Her body was taken to the Murang’a County Referral Hospital morgue.
