Two men from Malindi, Kilifi County have been arrested on allegations of kidnapping two police officers.

The suspects are said to have kidnapped the law enforcement officers, who were manning a roadblock on Sabaki bridge early Thursday.

Police told K24 Digital that the suspects, who were travelling in a lorry, had been flagged down by the police officers. The cops entered the back of the lorry to inspect the goods that had been carried in the truck.

The driver of the lorry and his turn-boy are said to have, thereafter, locked the police officers in the back of the lorry before igniting the engine and speeding towards Mombasa direction.

The suspects reached yet another roadblock, and were ordered to stop, but they defied the orders.

The cops who were manning the second roadblock fired in the air to scare the suspects, but none of the two men heeded the warning. They continued speeding towards Mombasa.

It took the intervention of boda boda riders to facilitate the suspects’ arrest.

The motorbike riders are said to have placed boulders on the road ahead, forcing the suspects to decelerate, switch off the lorry’s engine and flee the scene.

The suspects were, however, cornered, and handed over to police officers, who were pursuing them.

The area’s boda boda chairman, Joseph Mwangu, told K24 Digital that they decided to help in stopping the lorry after it “became clear that the vehicle’s occupants were up to no good, given they had defied a stop order”.

Malindi Sub-County police boss, Vitalis Otieno, said the suspects, who are in custody, will be charged with attempted abduction.
