Pires Morgan has jumped to the defence of Cristiano Ronaldo and accused Manchester United of shamefully disrespecting the Portuguese star.

Ronaldo refused to be subbed on against Tottenham on Wednesday night and then walked down the Old Trafford tunnel on his own before the final whistle.

Coach Erik ten Hag refused to react to the situation after the game, but on Thursday the club released a statement stating that the 37-year-old would be dropped from Man United's squad for their match with Chelsea this Saturday.

His antics have put doubts over Ronaldo's future at the club, with many fans suggesting it's for time the Portuguese icon to leave the club. However, Piers Morgan believes both the club and its supporters are not showing enough respect to their number seven.

Taking to Twitter, the TV presenter, who's own walkout from Great Morning Britain in 2021 has been likened to Ronaldo's stomp down the tunnel on Wednesday evening said: 'I think the collective disrespect towards Cristiano from his manager and many Utd fans after all he’s done for your club, not least last season, is shameful. There’s my opinion.'

It's not the first comment the 57-year-old has made on the situation this week. Upon hearing the news that Ronaldo had been dropped for Saturday's trip to Stamford Bridge, Morgan laid into the United manager had suggested he'd be better off at another club.

Once again posting on Twitter, the TV host said: 'Disgraceful. Ten Hag once again opting to humiliate the greatest footballer in history & Utd’s top scorer last season… @Cristiano should find another club asap where they treat him with the respect he’s earned.'

Ten Hag's decision not to play Ronaldo in midweek paid off, as United put in their best performance of the season with the 2-0 win over Spurs, thanks to goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes.

In recent games, the Dutchman has tended to bring the former Ballon d'Or winner off the bench and had intended to do again on Wednesday before Ronaldo's refusal to be substituted on.

He has remained a bit-part player so far this season and has only netted once in the Premier League, with Ten Hag has put his trust in younger attackers Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and new recruit Antony.
