Two women have been arrested for the offence of aiding their brother to defile a five-year-old girl in Mombasa.

Bahati Juma Said and Mwanakombo Ramadhan were arraigned before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Monday, February 13, and pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to defeat justice.

The court heard that the minor, who is the suspects' niece, had been left under their care by her mother who had travelled to Saudia Arabia in search of greener pastures.

The court was told that the suspect, Said Salim aged 21, defiled the minor on several occasions but the two sisters never reported the matter to the police.

Court documents show that the matter was brought to the attention of the police by the minor's teacher who noticed that she had difficulty walking.

The teacher called the minor's guardian to accompany them to hospital, however, she alerted the suspect who went into hiding in Tanzania.

"On February 6 this year at Msikiti Noor area in Likoni Sub County within Mombasa County jointly conspired to prevent the course of justice by not reporting to police a case of defilement of a minor aged 5 years and aiding the perpetrator to escape," court papers read in part.

Mutuku ordered the suspects to be released on a bond of Ksh200,000 each with an alternative of Ksh 100,000 cash bail.

The matter will be mentioned on February 27, 2023, for pretrial.
