A tenant who went to her upcountry home at the outbreak of Coronavirus last year has moved to court to sue her caretaker for taking her household goods and using them without her consent.

During a plea taking session at Kibera Law courts, the judge read that Anthony Kusu was said to have played a role in breaking into Mercy Chebet ’s Kangemi house where they are accused of stealing domestic goods like sufurias, blankets and other household goods between July and September 2020.

“On an unknown day between July 2020 and September 2020 at Kangemi in Dagoretti sub-county within Nairobi County, jointly with others not before court broke and entered the dwelling house of Mercy Chebet Too and stole herein assorted household goods as per the attached list all valued at Ksh229,800,” particulars of the charge sheet read in part.

Before the theft, Chebet had allegedly rented a house where Kusu was a caretaker and left for her rural home. It was then when the Covid-19 broke out and she was locked out before coming back.

And due to the hardships resulting from the pandemic, she was not able to pay her rent for some months since her business in the city had shut down because no one was available to run it.

The accused in the company of the agent and others who are still at large broke into her house and removed her household goods. When Chebet returned to the city, she was shocked to find her things missing.

This forced her to report the matter to the local administration in vain. He then reported the matter to police who went into the accused person’s house and recovered the missing items which he was using.

He denied the charges in court and he was released on a bond of ksh300,000.

The case will be mentioned on October 12.
