A 39-year-old woman identified as CNM has been charged after she allegedly attempted to sell her grandson for Ksh400,000.

A Makadara court heard that CNM took her grandchild from her 16-year-old daughter in Kakamega four days after she had given birth.

At the time, she pledged that she would take care of the child in Nairobi and her daughter agreed noting that she would visit her baby after school.

When she arrived in Nairobi, CNM allegedly conspired with other accomplices ready to sell the baby. Their plans were halted after a good samaritan reported to the police.

The police subsequently posed as potential buyers for the baby where they negotiated the price to Ksh300,000 against the Ksh400,000 offered by the accused.

She was later arrested after they met at a restaurant in town. Police took the baby to a children's home and also arrested the baby's mother who is currently under witness protection.

The accused was charged with trafficking in persons contrary to Section 3 (1) (d) of the Counter Trafficking in Persons Act, 2010.

She denied all the charges when she appeared before principal magistrate Lewis Gatheru and was released on a Ksh200,000 bail.

The case will be heard on May 9, 2023.
