‘When you catch me like rat on the highway’ man charged over impounded Ksh2M gov’t medicine

Alex Munga Sadi, the man whose video went viral for accusing police officers of ‘catching him like a rat on the highway’ in 2016 has been charged in court.

Sadi, who was arrested by Pharmacy and Poisons Board officers on Sunday, March 12, 2023, was, on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, charged with being in possession of public stores contrary to section 32 as read with section 36 of the penal code, by a Shanzu court.

The particulars are that on March 12, 2023, at about 3:00 pm at Kadunguni pharmacy in Mtwapa, he was found in possession of the drugs from Kenya Medical Supplies Agencies.

The chargesheet details that he was in possession of 41 different types of drugs of various quantities valued at approximately Ksh2 million.

Head of Crime Investigations and Enforcement Unit at the Pharmacy and Poisons Board Dennis Otieno had earlier estimated the cost of the impounded drugs at about Ksh5 million.

“On 12th March, 2023, at about 1500Hrs at Kadunguni pharmacy in Mtwapa, Kilifi Sub-County within Kilifi County, (Alex Munga Sadi) was found in possession of government stores from Kenya Medical Suppliers Agencies…,” the charge sheet read in parts.

He however pleaded not guilty to the charges before Shanzu Senior Resident Magistrate Hon. David Odhiambo.

But the prosecution Counsel Nadrat Mazrui informed the court that the matter was of public interest and that the suspect should be released on stringent bond terms.

Consequently, he was released on a bond of Ksh1 million with one similar surety with an alternative of Ksh500, 000 cash bail.

The case has been scheduled for pre-trial on March 31, 2023.
