United Democratic Alliance (UDA) presidential running mate Rigathi Gachagua has said the Kenya Kwanza government will reform the National Police Service to United States of America standards.
Speaking in Kiambu County on Wednesday, June 15, Gachagua said Kenya's police personnel had been misused for a long time.
"Our police officers will work as the American ones. If they find you drunk as an old man, they will not take you to a cell.
"They'll put you in their land-rover and take you home to your wife," he said.
This is the second time Gachagua is saying what the Kenya Kwanza government will do for the police after promising that should they win the election in August, they will do away with the current police uniform.
Gachagua comments angers Kibicho
The comments did not sit well with Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, who said the uniform was there to stay.
"Uniforms are not just a matter of colour. They signify certain doctrines that must be appreciated whenever a merger occurs.
"It is disrespectful for Rigathi Gichagua, who, being a former government administrator, knows too well the role of the Uniform Committee, to contemptuously dismiss the careful considerations that informed the new uniform," the PS said on Kameme television.
