Wapi Pay board sends packing founders Ndichu brothers after they were accused of gender-based violence

The Board of Directors of Wapi Pay has announced that the company co-founders, Edward Ndichu and Paul Ndichu have stepped aside from their managerial roles to allow investigations into their alleged case of Gender-Based Violence.

In a statement released on Tuesday, October 19, Wapi Pay announced that two will step aside immediately as the board commits to conclude on the matter within the next 30 days.

"The Board of Directors of Wapi Pay would like to announce that the Company co-founders, Eddie Ndichu, who is the current Chief Executive Officer, and Paul Ndichu, the current Executive Director, will step aside with immediate effect to allow investigations to take their course," Wapi Pay in the statement.

Wapi Pay said that Elizabeth Kariuki who is the current Chief Operating Officer (COO) will take up the Chief Executive Officer role on an interim basis.

"As indicated earlier, Wapi Pay is built on, and practises, a culture of respect for all its stakeholders, employees and customers and does not tolerate any form of discrimination, including but not limited to any form of gender-based violence," the statement read in part.

The announcement by Wapi Pay comes after Edward Ndichu stepped down from his position as a board member of the Association of Fintechs in Kenya (AFIK).

In its statement to the press, AFIK said the board held a meeting on Monday where Eddie stepped down after unfortunate allegations levelled against him went viral in the public discourse.

“The Board of the Associations of Fintechs in Kenya (hereinafter “the Board”) takes note of the unfortunate allegations made against our member Eddie Ndichu following an altercation at a city hotel on Saturday the 17 of October 2021. The allegations are now subject to public discourse, particularly on social media platforms,” AFIK said in the statement.

The Board of AFIK said it regrets the current circumstances adding that it does not in any way condone gender-based violence or violence of any kind.
