Three houses in Senyende village in Shinyalu, Kakamega County have been torched in retaliation after a 19-year-old girl was raped and killed on New Year's eve.

According to the girl's father, Josephat Shisundi, the suspects identified as Lameck Akhonya and Timothy Isiaho, allegedly cornered his daughter, Clarice Alutsia, as she was walking home from Lurambi market.

The murdered girl's cousin, Peter Shikoli, said he bumped into one of the suspects, Akhonya, carrying a blood-stained machete as he walked away from the crime scene.

When he confronted him about what had happened, Shikoli said the suspect remained mum but moments later bumped into his aunty who was crying for help seeking to know where she could take her daughter for first aid and treatment.

Shikoli said that he drove the two to several health facilities but the injured girl received no help because of the ongoing health workers strike.

He said the girl bled to death as she was being transported to Kisumu.

Shinyalu OCPD Robert Makau said that one of the suspects, Akhonya, surrendered himself to the police while his co-accused Isiaho, is suspected to be hiding in the Kakamega Forest.

Locals claimed that the duo has been terrorising villagers at night.

The teenager's body was taken to a mortuary in Kakamega town.
