WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram apps have gone down for thousands of users across the globe.

Problems with the services, which are all owned by Facebook, began today in the evening at around 4:30 pm, according to online outage trackers affecting users globally.

Soon after the first report came through, the hashtag #facebookdown was trending on Twitter, with users worldwide reporting issues connecting.

In response to the outage, WhatsApp through their official Twitter account informed their users that they are working towards restoring the app.

"We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!" the tweet read.
