Uhuru confers 8 city lawyers with coveted Senior Counsel title

President Uhuru Kenyatta has conferred eight Kenyan lawyers with the coveted Senior Counsel title.

In a gazette notice, the Head of State elevated former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Allen Waiyaki Gichuhi to the rank of senior lawyers in the country as he prepares to retire next week. Gichuhi served as LSK boss from 2018-2020.

Former LSK - Nairobi Chairperson Charles Kanjama and Karori Kamau, who appeared for Attorney General Kihara Kariuki during the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) petition hearing are also on the list.

Others are Mwaura Lillian Wakiiya, Kevin Dermot, Gathenji Mbuthi, Kibet Jinaro Kipkemoi and Mutua Eric Kyalo.

The Presidential Prerogative to confer the rank and dignity of Senior Counsel is set out under the Advocates Act.

"I have conferred the rank and dignity of Senior Counsel on the following advocates of the High Court of Kenya. May it be known that the aforementioned have all the precedences of the rank," read the gazette notice," the gazette notice dated Friday, August 4 read in part.

Kalonzo Karua conferred with Senior Counsel title

In 2020, a total of 24 Advocates joined the Senior Counsel club after a long wait.

Among those conferred with the title were former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua, renowned arbitrator John Ohaga, family lawyer Judy Thongori, former chief executive of the defunct Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) Patricia Nyaundi and Kioko Kilukumi.

The rank of Senior Counsel is conferred in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee on Senior Counsel.
