A cross-section of Central Kenya leaders on Saturday said President Uhuru Kenyatta is and will remain the region’s political kingpin.

Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia, James Nyoro (acting Kiambu governor), MPs Peter Mwathi (Limuru), Jonah Mburu (Lari), Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba, and former MPs Mburu Kahangara, Dennis Waweru, and Kiremi Mwiria said the region would seek the President’s guidance and counsel ahead of the probable referendum.

Kimemia, who is also the Mt Kenya governors’ forum chair, urged people from the region to support Uhuru in his efforts to unite the nation.

He downplayed the apparent differences among leaders from the region, saying Central would eventually speak in one voice come 2022 elections.

“For now, we should focus on development and avoid the 2022 debate,” he said.

Nyoro urged leaders to desist from politicising development as Mwathi said the region would follow the route Uhuru would lead them to.

He hailed the President’s zeal in fighting corruption and tribalism, saying:  “Uhuru is our senior most muthamaki (kingpin) and as a community, we will seek his guidance, that of the Kikuyu council of elders and God’s as we approach the expiry of his term in office.”

Mwathi added that Kenyans would change the Constitution if the changes proposed by the Building Bridges Initiative would be beneficial to them.

The leaders spoke at Nyamweru Secondary School grounds during the coronation of former senior chief Joseph Gitau as a leader of Athuri a Kiama Kia Ma (Gikuyu council of elders).
