Two women accused of stealing a month old baby before altering its birth notification details were on Tuesday arraigned before the court.

Felista Wairimu Kahumbi and Lydia Wanjiku Maina were charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit a felony and child theft when they appeared before Milimani Law Courts' Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo.

The two are accused of fraudulently taking a child below the age of one month from an unknown parent within Mihango, Kayole estate in Nairobi. They are accused of committing that crime on March 15, 2022.

Wairimu is accused of receiving the child on the said date and place yet she knew very well that her action would deprive the unknown parent of the right to be with her child.

A witness told the court that, at the time, the suspects posed as good samaritans out to help the child's mother before escaping with the baby.

The two, however, denied the charges and were released on a bond of Ksh500,000 with a surety of a similar amount without alternative cash bail.
