Two suspects were on Monday arraigned before a Maralal court for allegedly gang-raping a 12-year- old girl in Lpartuk area, Samburu Central.

While appearing before the Senior Resident Magistrate John Lolwatan Tamar, the suspects - Lojungu Lengaru and Leramat Lentirash denied the charges. The prosecution side charged them with gang defilement contrary to section 11(1) of the Sexual Offenses Act No. 3 of 2006.

The charge sheet read that on Thursday at Lpartuk village in Samburu Central, they intentionally and unlawfully gang defiled a minor aged 12 years (name withheld). The prosecution documents before the court indicate Lojungu and Lemarat did indecent act to a minor contrary to the Sexual Offences Act.

The defilement case was first reported at Maralal Police Station on Friday where the accused individuals were arrested before being arraigned.

The alleged defilement occurred on June 24, 2021, and was discovered when the grandmother of the child noticed her child not to be walking comfortably. The grandparent interrogated the child where she mentioned the two suspects to have defiled her.

The victim is still admitted to the Samburu County Referral Hospital for a medical check-up.

The court ruled the accused persons to be released on a bond of Sh500, 000 or a cash bail of Sh200, 000 pending the hearing and determination of the case.
