Two police officers attached to KBC Police Station in Matungulu Sub County have been arrested in connection to the murder of 20-year-old Mark Lumbasi Natala.

Police Constables Erick Odhiambo Amolo and Corenelios Munyao Ndambuki were arrested on Thursday and will be arraigned in Machakos High Court on Friday, June 4 to be charged for the offence of murder.

“An inquiry file no. 3/2021 was opened, investigations commenced and later taken over by CCIO Machakos who upon completion of investigations, forwarded the file to ODPP Machakos,” part of the police OB report read.

Natala was arrested on March 9 at Malaa market in Machakos for allegedly stealing a bath tub and was booked at the station only for police to say that he hanged himself in the cell.

However, a post-mortem carried out on the deceased’s body revealed that Natala died of homicidal hanging after he was tortured on various parts of his body including his private parts.

"As a result of my examination, I formed the opinion that the cause of death was asphyxia due to neck compression secondary to homicidal hanging. Other significant findings are multiple generalised contusions," a report by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduro revealed.

According to the deceased’s brother Ezekiel Natala, he received a phonemail on March 10 informing him that his brother died from a road accident in Kangundo.

However, after probing on how their kin met his death, the family was told that Natala committed suicide by hanging himself in a police station cell.

"A DCI officer handling the case then told us that my brother had died inside KBC Police Station cells under mysterious circumstances," Ezekiel told journalists.
