Two people were admitted at Nyamira Referral Hospital in critical condition after being rescued from the debris of a collapsed building in Nyamira.

Members of the public had to withstand heavy down pour to rescue some the casualties from Nyamira County administration block which collapsed on Thursday, May 27 evening.

The building block which was under construction trapped workers who were working on it.

Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo and County Commissioner Amos Mariba joined members of the public in rescuing the casualties.

However the rescue mission was hampered by lucky necessary equipment and skilled man power.

According to an eye witness, the excavators needed for the rescue operation were not found in Nyamira county and had to be sought from the neighboring Kisii county to help in retrieving the trapped workers.

Among those trapped is the engineer who was supervising the project.

Speaking to reporters at the scene Governor Nyaribo said the materials used were not up to standard, a mistake which led to the collapse of the building. Nyaribo also revealed that the contractor was awarded a Ksh.379million tender to construct the building.

In his statement, Nyamira County Commissioner castigated members of the public who took advantage of the tragedy to loot.

Kiabonyoru ward MCA Duke Omoti said that they had also questioned the tendering process of the building which he alleged was singly done by the speaker
