A state of sombre mood has engulfed a village in Gakwegori, Embu West after two minors were burnt beyond recognition in a house fire.

Kiangima Assistant Chief Joseph Maina who confirmed the incident said the two minors were left in the house by their mother who had gone to her husband's workplace.

The administrator said that efforts by the neighbours to rescue the two children as they cried for help were thwarted by the house's locked door.

"The mother said that she had locked the two inside the house with a padlock, This made the efforts by the neighbours who responded to the distress call from the children futile.

Following the incident, Maina warned locals against leaving their children in the house with locked doors.

Susan Nyaga, a local, described the incident as unfortunate and a great loss to the community.

She asked residents to always leave their children with their neighbours if they want to leave their homes instead of locking them inside the house.

She also blamed the county government emergency department for taking long to respond to the fire incident.

"The county government should be alert all through, the fire brigade arrived here an hour later," Susan said.

The Embu tragedy comes a week after three other children also died after their house broke into flames, burning them beyond recognition.

The bodies of the two have since been moved to Embu level 5 hospital mortuary pending investigations by the police.
