A suspect in an assault case on Sunday, November 21, resisted arrest by shooting dead a police officer and injuring a civilian during a confrontation at his home in Turkana County.
K24 Digital has established that the suspect identified as Lokucha Louriyen shot dead Police Constable Simon Orang’i and injured Peter Esekon when they arrived at his home to arrest him.
In a police report seen by this reporter, an officer identified as Robert Maina who was in charge of investigations in the assault case in which Peter’s wife Awaar Esekon reported that she had been beaten by Louriyen.
Awaar, reported the matter to the police at Lodwar Police Station on Thursday, November 18 and the matter was recorded under OB number 33/18/11/2021.
“Robert Maina reported that he was accompanied to the home of the accused with the aim of making inquiries and possible arrest by Simon Orang’I and Maxwell Okwanya. They were led by the complainant and her husband Peter Ekeson,” the report read in part.
He said the accused came out of one of his traditional houses in the compound while armed with an AK-47 rifle and started shooting aimlessly.
The report revealed that he was shooting while surrounded by several children and two women who police believe are his wives.
In the process, Orang’i was shot in the abdomen and right arm while the complainant’s husband Ekeson was shot in the leg.
“The suspect then escaped into the surrounding thicket. The complainant managed to escape unhurt,” the report further read.
The two officers who had accompanied Orang’i then evacuated the two casualties from the scene to Lodwar County and Referral Hospital.
However, Orang’i was pronounced dead on arrival while the condition of Esekon was stabilised and he is still admitted at the facility.
Orang’i’s lifeless body was taken to the hospital’s morgue awaiting postmortem. His rifle was also recovered at the scene.
Currently, the scene is full of heavily armed police officers who are under the command of Lodwar’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS).
Investigations and a manhunt for the suspect have also been launched.
