A 15-year-old girl from Senyende Village in Muranda, Shinyalu Constituency in Kakamega County died on Tuesday, December 15 after a tree branch fell on her while she was fetching firewood in Kakamega Forest.

The Class Five pupil died on the spot, her mother, Jacqueline Kadogo, told K24 Digital.

“My daughter and two of her friends had gone into the forest to fetch firewood. Unfortunately, a branch tree fell on her head, killing her on the spot,” Kadogo said.

The lead administrator of Kakamega Forest, Wycliffe Mwanje, has advised parents against sending children into the forest to harvest firewood, saying the forest poses a lot of danger, including attacks by wild animals.

“Some sexual predators also hide in the forest,” he said.

Confirming the incident, Shinyalu OCPD, Robert Makau, said the teenager’s body was taken to Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue.

The girl’s family have appealed for financial aid from the Kakamega County Government or the National Government.
