Transport was paralysed along Embu Kanyoonyoo Road after bodaboda riders blocked the road demanding the removal of muddy bumps erected last month which they claim caused the death of their colleague.

The angry riders blocked the busy road with huge stones and burnt tyres preventing access by other motorists.

The confrontation between the irate riders and police who arrived at the area to calm the situation lasted for hours causing a big traffic snarl.

Some motorists opted to use alternative routes to avoid being caught up in the melee.

The makeshift bumps were built on Tuesday, January 4, after a rider and his three passengers; a woman and her two children perished on the spot in a grisly accident involving two motorcycles and a courier van.

Led by area MCA Morris Nyaga, the bumps were meant to reduce cases of accidents that were rampant at Matakari area along the road.

The bumps would three days after erection cause death to a bodaboda rider who succumbed while receiving treatment in hospital.

The protesters were demanding that the government should move with speed and address their cry by erecting a long-lasting standard bump on that particular area.

According to the MCA, over 100 pedestrians and bodaboda operators have lost their lives in the last year.

Embu county commissioner Abdulahi Galgalo has also called on the Kenya  National Highways Authority [KeNHA] to erect speed bumps in the area.
