Residents of Tuigoin area in Cherang'any, Trans Nzoia County, woke up to a shocking incident on Friday, August 5, 2022, after discovering a newborn baby dumped in a pit latrine.

Police reports indicate that the baby was dumped in the pit by a 16-year-old student moments after delivery. The new mother is a student at AIC Kiptenden Secondary School.

Confirming the incident, Kibuswo sub-location Assistant Chief Gilbert Chepsiror said the baby boy was rescued and rushed to Cherang’any sub-county hospital where he is recuperating.

The local administrator said the girl is also at the same hospital where she is being attended to.

“I received a call from one of my village elders that a young girl had delivered at her parents’ home and dumped her baby in a pit latrine. I rushed there and we rescued the baby who is being attended to at the hospital,” Chepsiror said.

“The girl was also taken to hospital to receive treatment after she developed some complications. Both of them are in stable condition,” he said.

The mother of the girl has since been arrested for allegedly assisting her daughter to get rid of the baby.

“I informed the police of the incident, they came here and the mother of the girl has been arrested. The 70-year-old woman and her daughter will be arraigned in court for committing the offence of attempted infanticide,” Chepsiror added.

The officer condemned the incident and called on residents, especially expectant teenagers to desist from such indecent acts that endanger their lives.

“Our teenage girls who have been impregnated should not go this route because it is dangerous to their lives. Parents should also not aid their girls to commit such offences; they should know life begins at conception and that every child has a right to live” he added.

Other residents of Tuigoin area condemned the act and asked girls to be more responsible so that they don’t fall victim to unwanted pregnancies.
