Detectives arrested three robbery suspects in Busia on Tuesday evening and recovered an AK-47 rifle that had earlier been stolen from Police Constable Sirar Saitoti.

The rifle serial number KE AP 4849372 was robbed from the officer on November 13, when he was on his way to the residence of the Siaya County Commissioner by a man and a woman who hit him with a blunt object.

He was found bleeding near the Red Cross offices and was taken to Siaya County Referral Hospital.

On Tuesday, detectives from the Special Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU) accompanied by their counterparts from the Busia Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) raided a residence in Mauko where three suspects —Henry Lawwy Hagaba 36, Robert Seraphine Deveuster Ogalle 30, and Michael Wesonga 34 — were arrested.

The detectives recovered the firearm in the house of Ogallo, minus the 30 rounds of ammunition.

The three suspects have been linked to a series of robberies in the county and the neighbouring Siaya County, especially in the last three weeks.

A Toyota Premio registration UAW 553A, believed to have been stolen from the Uganda was also recovered.

Busia County has been hit by a spate of armed robberies in the past two months.

Over 15 people have been killed by armed gangs, among them a businesswoman in Funyula who was killed and Sh50,000 stolen from her.

The brutal killing of the businesswoman happened just hours after Isaiah Oduor and Steven Ouma both bodaboda operators from Sigalame were shot by unknown gunmen in police uniform.
