Three suspected robbers have been shot dead in a shootout with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Mombasa Road, Nairobi.

DCI said the armed thugs were part of a six-member gang that was on a mission to commit a robbery along Mombasa Road on Tuesday evening at around 5pm, after staging a similar attack in the city.

They were ambushed at Alfa Centre by detectives from the Special Service Unit (SSU) after a tip-off from a member of the public.

"The three miscreants who had just staged a robbery and were headed for another mission along Mombasa road," DCI said.

The gang, DCI said, was ordered to surrender, but defied the orders by firing at the officers, prompting a shootout with the sleuths.

"Without wasting time, the battle-hardened crime busters answered the provocation with finality, fatally wounding three of the thugs while a similar number escaped, their bodies riddled with gunshot injuries," DCI added.

A pistol and a laptop were among items recovered from the felled thugs.

"Following the evening shootout, a barreta pistol serial number 1999667 CAT 5802 loaded with four rounds of 9mm calibre, one toy pistol, one pocket phone, one HP laptop, one hammer, one Somali sword and six assorted mobile phones were recovered from the thugs," DCI said.

Some of the items were identified by an Asian man said to have been attacked by the thugs earlier.

"Even before the sleuths had handed over the scene to experts from the forensic crime scenes investigations unit, a man of Asian origin who had been attacked at gunpoint minutes before, arrived at the scene and identified some of the items recovered from the fallen thugs as his," police added.

Bodies of the deceased were moved to City mortuary pending identification as the hunt for the accomplices intensifies.
