Three children from Lioki in Githunguri, Kiambu County were on Friday morning (November 27) confirmed dead after drowning in a private dam while fetching water.

The children aged between six and eight years old were siblings, with two established to be twins.

The deceased’s mother said she had sent the trio to fetch water for domestic use, but did not return.

Confirming the incident, area chief Kahura wa Ngochi said the dam in which the children drowned is ten feet deep.

“Due to the depth of the dam, it was really hard for the minors to swim to safety,” said Ngochi.

The administrator now wants the owner of the dam to fence it off, or drain its waters and fill it with soil within 48 hours, failure of which, he (Ngochi) will institute legal action against the dam owner.

The siblings’ bodies were removed and taken to Gakoe Health Centre morgue.
