A terror suspect who survived gunshot wounds from a police officer nicknamed himself the "survivor" moments after he regained consciousness at the Coast General referral hospital, a Mombasa court heard.

While appearing before the court, Mombasa Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) manager, Morris Kinyua told Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate, Vincent Adet that Sudri alias survivor had earlier informed ATPU officers that those were his names contrary to claims that he was named by the officers.

Kinyua also claimed that he was aware that the suspect had adopted his new name after he survived gunshot wounds fired by a police officer.

It is reported that the officer fired at him after he attempted to stab him with a kitchen knife.

"After we raided his house in Tudor, following a tip-off by intelligence reports, we surrounded his house, moments after one of our officers gained entry into his house, he held a kitchen knife at him and this is how he was shot since he had resisted arrest," he said.

The suspect through his lawyer Chacha Mwita claimed that he (Sudri) was nicknamed, "survivor" by the detectives because they did not expect him to survive the shooting.

"He was named the survivor because he withstood the shots that were fired at him. What was the reason for shooting him since nothing was recovered from the said house, isn't this similar to how a hyena accuses its cubs of smelling like goats when the hyena wants to eat them?" Chacha posed.
