Kitale: Suspect in police uniform arrested after robbing man of mobile phone

A 27-year-old man has been after vilently robbing a man in Kitale, Trans Nzoia county.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Dan Muiruri was arrested by officers on patrol moments after the Sunday night incident.

DCI said the man, who was dressed in a police smoke jacket, was in a group of five men who had attacked a man walking home and robbed him of his mobile phone and other valuables.

"The victim of the crime reported the incident to police officers on patrol who immediately launched a manhunt for the suspects," DCI said.

"An hour later, the suspect who was dressed in police fatigues was arrested and the victim’s mobile phone recovered."

Also recovered from the suspect were a kitchen knife and 17 rolls of weed.

The suspect is being held at Kitale Police station pending arraignment for robbery with violence charges.

Four cops arrested

In a separate incident, police on Monday arrested four colleagues who attempted to rob two men who had just withdrawn Ksh2 million from a bank in Nairobi.

According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, four rogue cops targetted Hassan Omar, an employee of Afro Forex Bureau, together with one Mohammed Hassan who had gone to Absa bank along Mama Ngina street where they withdrew cash amounting to Ksh2 million at around 11 am on Monday.

Omar and Hassan while along Standard Street, about 20 meters from the Afro Forex bureau, were confronted by four men who claimed to be police officers and informed them that they were after the said Mohammed Hassan who was carrying the bag containing the money.

The four cops told the two men that Hassan was wanted for an offence that they did not disclose to them.

Hassan Omar raised an alarm which attracted the nearby security guards and Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) officers who were guarding the nearby Dahabshil Forex Bureau.

They rushed to the scene and one of the security guards from Afro Forex Bureau together with the manager immediately took the bag containing the money to the forex bureau for safe custody.

Hassan Omar and Mohammed Hassan were then arrested by the four rogue officers who were using a motor vehicle with registration KBZ 036B Toyota Premio white in colour.

The four claimed that they were taking the duo to DCI headquarters. Later, the owners of the forex bureau reported the matter to the police and the said motor vehicle and the occupants were intercepted within Muthaiga.

The four rogue cops were identified as S/no. 49743 Sgt Daniel Wambua, C/O DCI Kasarani, S/no 76984 Pc Stanley Mohammed Gitonga of DCI Kasarani, S/no 240656 Cpl Eliud Bor attached to Kenyan union office at Gigiri as a security officer SGB.

It was later established that Sgt Nicholas Murira attached to Mugutha police station, Juja sub-county was with the trio at the scene but was not found in the car at the time of the arrest.

After the arrest, the rogue officers were escorted to Nairobi area DCI offices for interrogation and later to Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) Central for further police action.
