A 32-year-old man, who had been detained at Mayanja police post in Bungoma South over defilement allegations, died on Monday, June 22 after developing breathing complications, police say.

Silvester Nyakundi, a cop at Mayanja, alongside his colleague, Jackline Muthoni, the officer in charge of the report desk at the time, said at 5:30 am they “heard a knock from the male cell”.

“They opened the cells and found other prisoners trying to assist one male prisoner (sic), Josiah Namunyu, who had developed seizure, and having difficulty in breathing. The OCS was informed, and on visit to the cells, the suspect was found already dead,” says a police report filed at Mayanja police post in Bungoma South under OB Number 22/6/2020.

Police say Namunyu, 32, was scheduled to be arraigned for defilement later Monday, June 22.

“The suspect had been subjected to mob justice prior to his arrest, and had been treated at Bungoma County Referral Hospital and discharged after his condition improved,” said the report filed at 6:05am Monday.

The deceased was taken to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital morgue awaiting postmortem.
