Three newly created Sub-counties in Tharaka Nithi County are among the six Sub-counties listed for the recruitment of volunteer National Youth Service (NYS) servicemen and women.

The recruitment which is scheduled to take place between Monday, 29 August 2022 and Saturday 3, September 2022 will now include Chiakariga, Igambang’ombe and Muthambi Sub-counties - newly created and gazetted by Interior and Coordination of National Government Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’I and already commissioned.

Missing on the NYS list are Chuka North and Chuka South Sub-counties, created from the split of Chuka Sub-County (Meru South) and gazetted on 20, July 2022 by CS Matang’I.

The two Sub-counties are yet to be commissioned officially.

The newly created Sub-counties serve as a promise delivered by President Uhuru Kenyatta to the people of Tharaka Nithi, with the first creation, Igambang’ombe promised by Uhuru in June 2017 during his tour of the county.

The creation of Igambango’mbe however faced hurdles after Chuka High Court on 12 January 2022 nullified its creation on grounds that it was established without adhering to the requirement of public participation.

This followed a case filed by 13 Chuka community elders challenging its creation in 2019, with the court giving the government 90 days to make amendments or the administrative unit would be scrapped.

39 people had earlier written to CS Matiang’I challenging its creation, citing a lack of public participation in the process.

Recruitment for Tharaka North and Meru South will take place on Monday, 29 August 2022 at Rwatha Primary School in Gatunga and Chuka DCC offices respectively while Tharaka South recruitment is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 30 August 2022 at Marimanti Play Grounds.

Chiakariga Sub-County is scheduled to have the recruitment on Wednesday, 31 August 2022 at DCC offices in Chiakariga while recruitment in Igambang’ombe Sub-County is expected to take place at the DCC offices at Kathwana on Thursday, 01 September 2022.

Muthambi Sub-County will conduct its recruitment at the DCC offices on Friday, 02 September 2022.

Successful candidates will report for the NYS paramilitary training course at NYS college Gilgil and NYS TTI Naivasha.

Volunteers are required to be Kenyan citizens and be residents of their respective Sub-County of recruitment, be 18 to 24 years, have a mean grade of D in KCSE, and produce an original ID, certificate of good conduct and academic certificates.
