Occupants of over 10 homesteads in Marinda trading centre, Kapomboi ward in Kwanza Constituency, Trans Nzoia County were forced to spend the night in the cold after their houses were destroyed following a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds on Monday, October 11, at night.

According to Cecilia Juma, a village elder within the area, their rental house roofs were blown off by strong winds.

Juma said the victims lost all their belongings and are currently in need of basic human needs.

"There was a heavy downpour, strong winds later followed and destroyed over 10 houses," Juma said.

Agnes Nekesa, another resident expressed her worry that their children may not be able to report to school since they do not have school uniforms and books.

"Our children neither slept nor took their breakfast. How will our children go to school? Nekesa asked.

Kapomboi ward member of County Assembly Bernard Mlipuko called for humanitarian support from both the national and county governments as well as from people of goodwill.

"This is a disaster like Corona, floods, and even post-election violence where people are displaced from their houses. These people need food, shelter and clothing," Mlipuko said.

He requested nearby churches to accommodate the victims while they wait for their houses to be built afresh.

Kenya Red Cross society today visited the area to assess the situation and to offer psychosocial support.

This comes at a time when the Kenya Metrological department reports that heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds will be experienced in some parts of the country for the next two months.
