Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has said that Somalia invited Turkey to conduct oil exploration in its seas, news agency Reuters quotes private broadcaster NTV as saying.

Turkey has aided and invested in the country in recent years. It has sent engineers to help build roads and officers to help train Somali soldiers in efforts to build up the country's army.

President Erdogan said Turkey would honour the invitation but did not elaborate on how.

Turkish companies and workers have recently been targeted in deadly bomb attacks by militant Islamist group al-Shabab.
