Police officers have arrested six suspects for allegedly trying to smuggle miraa abroad that was concealed in French beans and eggplants consignment.

Acting on a tip-off, the police officers based at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) intercepted the vehicle that was transporting the miraa, a banned substance in many countries.

"Security officers based at JKIA have intercepted a motor vehicle Reg No. KAW 122R at the Airways Cargo Export section whereupon inspecting the contents of the 150 cartons that were labeled Fine Beans and Ravaya for export," said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Twitter.

The arrested suspects were identified as Ahmed Habib, James Ngure, Duke Mutambo, Raphael Ngotho, Stephen Ngugi and Julius Mulwa. The suspects had the cartons contained French beans and eggplants at the top but had Miraa concealed underneath.

Police said they will be charged in court.
