A Form Four student at Othaya Boys High School in Nyeri County collapsed and died on Wednesday afternoon while travelling back to school for the opening day.

It remains unclear what caused the death of the student who has been described as academically gifted.

Confirming the death, Othaya Boys school Principal E.M Waititu said burial arrangements of the student will be communicated later.

“He was one of the students in the school and when we were opening for this new term, he collapsed while on his way to school,” the principal said.

In a statement shared on the school’s official social media pages, the principal identified the student as Katali Mutinda Kimathi of admission number 5160.

“Kindly condole with us as we condole with his family. Burial arrangements will be communicated on a later date,” the statement read in part.

Immediately Kimathi collapsed good Samaritans rushed him to Kenyatta National Hospital- Othaya Annex where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body is currently preserved at Consolata Nursing Home awaiting a postmortem.

Kimathi was being sponsored by Equity Bank after he scored well in his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

His death is a big blow to his family which lives in abject poverty and the parents hoped that he was the one who will change their lives.

A family source told K24 Digital that Kimathi’s mother was bedridden three years ago after developing health complications.

His death comes just two days to the end of registration of students which according to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) lapses on July 31.
